OPINIONS
Opinions: Concealed weapons on campus can't hurt LIVINGOOD: As we all probably know by now, Arizona Senate Bill 1214 wants to allow civilians to carry legally concealed firearms on any college or university in the state so long as they have a permit. The naysayers of the bill are the Democrats in the Senate. And just for clarification, while I'm not (yet) a registered Democrat, I do hang out left of the line. But despite my apparent allegiances, I think those opposing the bill have it all wrong. The biggest argument against the bill basically is: "Remember the VT and NIU tragedies? Pretty damn awful, right? So, to protect ourselves from such things, we shouldn't pass SB 1214 because we shouldn't allow college students to have firearms on campus under any circumstances."
Opinions: Crow, ASU slapping state voters in face SHOPE: The issue of in-state tuition for illegal immigrant students has stirred much controversy on our campus and throughout the state. It should come as no surprise that there is controversy because Arizona voters, with over 70 percent of the vote I might add, thought they had dealt with the issue once and for all. By now, we all know the story: Arizona State University, through the ASU Foundation, has been matching illegal immigrant students with donors to assist them with their out-of-state tuition. ASU President Michael Crow recently told The Arizona Republic, "We're just trying to be helpful to them because many of them are really great students."
Opinions: Campus no place for guns PELTON: I'm going to bring a gun to campus. Well, not yet. But let that opening sentence sink in for a little bit because if Senate Bill 1214 goes through, I could be telling the truth. This bill would allow concealed weapons permit holders to bring guns onto college campus … legally. Should you agree? Um … um … uh … NO!
Opinions: Left Out So here we sit again — Selection Sunday has passed, and our ASU men's basketball team finds itself on the outside of the NCAA Tournament. The only difference this time around is that it sucks more — a lot more — because of the convoluted reasoning behind this exclusion. For starters, this is the second time in a few months our university has been left in the cold. If you'll recall, 9-3 Illinois took a beating in a BCS game while the 10-2 Arizona State football team was relegated to the Holiday Bowl. |
