Mesa airfield event gives opportunity to swing through time
Kaitlin Ochenrider / THE STATE PRESS
DANCING THE NIGHT AWAY: Event attendees dance the night away at a ’40s-style charity dance at the Commemorative Air Field Arizona Wing on Saturday evening. For 21 years now, Mesa's Commemorative Air Field has relived America's glory days and raised money to preserve its aviation history. The airfield continued its tradition Saturday night with "A Night in the '40s," a 1943-themed fundraiser modeled after WWII-era hangar dances.

Art senior finds future joy in creation - not income
Deanna Dent / THE STATE PRESS
INSPIRATION: Heidi Ruth stands in front of one of the highlighted pieces of her show, Chrysalis: The Contemporary Significance of the Classic Still Life, at the Step Gallery on Thursday afternoon. Many students take income into account when deciding on a career path. But for one art senior, inspiration and passion are the main influences.

There are many mysteries in life.

My vertical challenge
Dylan Winkler / STATE PRESS MAGAZINE
My entire life, I have been smaller than the average human being. As a child, my mother would always try and make me feel lucky to be vertically challenged by saying, "Good things come in small packages." She was obviously wrong, though, because Barbie's huge, beautiful dream house and sporty, drivable Jeep came in HUGE packages and those were the only "good things" on my list.

Sushi rolls roll by at new Sushi Eye

In the Valley's growing sea of sushi restaurants, it's becoming increasingly difficult to discern between one California roll and the next.

Review: Primer
Describing a movie as "indie" these days is usually more of a reflection on its quirkiness instead of its financing. It's easy to forget that indie flicks shouldn't just be about an ultra-cool soundtrack and characters dressed in thrift-store chic. They should aim to try new things.

Stress this!
Eric Binns / STATE PRESS MAGAZINE
Not many bands have the end in mind, but Dominic Lopez and Benjamin Scott Eccles of indie group Marble Stress! know when their time will be up.

I challenge you to a duel

The bloodsport of bug fighting has been popular in Asian culture for almost 2,000 years. Cricket fighting has roots in China, beetle fighting in Thailand, and spider fighting in the Philippines.

Unsung wonders

Like many others, journalism senior Danielle Ciraola has no idea what a melodica is.

Bombers, berets and porkpies, oh my!

A snazzy hat on a man can bring spice to an otherwise dull outfit, throw personality in every direction and make even the worst of scumbags just look hip.

Today, you become a man
Chelsea Kent / STATE PRESS MAGAZINE
Men who have style are oh so sexy. A well-dressed man can be a weakness for many women — think of fashion designer Tom Ford, and actors George Clooney and Jude Law.

Stand out Solo
Chelsea Kent / STATE PRESS MAGAZINE
To survive among today's coffeehouse chains, cafes often have to pursue a smaller, unique feel. Nothing could be more anti-Starbucks and anti-big business than the drinking-right-at-home feel of Solo Café.

Don't I know you?: Ridin' it dirty
The purpose of the elevator in Manzanita Hall is to transport students from one floor to another, but some avoid it and take the stairs. Its veteran status makes it a pro on dealing with all sorts of problems and its walls have definitely seen some crazy stuff.

Quitting school for a cause
Eric Binns / STATE PRESS MAGAZINE
One student decided he had enough with the mundane routines of college life. So he left.

Lindy Hopper hops to Tempe
Snapping to the beat in his head, a wide toothy grin lit up Lindy Hopper Frank Manning's face as he spoke about improvisation in jazz music.

ASU and the global good
Morgan Bellinger / STATE PRESS MAGAZINE
"I've noticed a change in my students over the last ten years. Now, when I ask my freshman students what they want to do, they say they want to help the world," engineering professor Mark Henderson says. "I am encouraged by their altruism."

The car cult
Sam Nalven / STATE PRESS MAGAZINE
Obsessed is not the right word — but it's close.
