Opinions: Boos & Bravos

Boo: to police's snooping around our social-networking profiles looking for incriminating evidence. That's a total buzz kill for us because Facebook and MySpace used to be the place we liked to brag about our renegade activities, and now we're just all nervous about possible warrants coming in. Perhaps it was a poor idea to name our photo albums "Delightful December Drive-bys" and "Money laundering fun!" after all.

Bravo: to the Sun Devil community for filling Wells Fargo Arena on Tuesday night for the NIT quarterfinals game against Florida and giving our team their second-biggest crowd of the year. We challenged you to take advantage of the free seats and turn Tempe into a place where big-time college basketball is possible and you enthusiastically stepped up to plate. Unfortunately, Florida's three-point shooters shared this enthusiasm.

Boo: to ASU for its plans to wait so long to have Sun Cards double as debit cards. The trend of putting student IDs and banking cards in one convenient package has picked up nationally, but ASU is looking to wait at least another five or seven years in order to fully weigh the pros and cons for the student body. We appreciate their concern, but how are we supposed to carry out our American duty of racking up thousands of dollars in debt without another card in our wallets?

Bravo: to the new state law named "Steven's Law" that Gov. Janet Napolitano recently signed. This law will require health-care providers to provide coverage for children living with certain disorders in the autism spectrum, including autistic disorders, Asperger's syndrome and other developmental disorders. Finally, families seeking various types of help, services and treatment won't need to be turned away on account of their health-care providers' stinginess.

Boo: to the disturbing conditions in Best C and the apparent lack of solutions Residential Life has for them. According to complaints on file about the residence hall, the puddles of potentially hazardous carpet goo, the mattresses of mold and the treatment for asbestos don't even tell the full story of what's lurking in the annals of Best C. At this point, we're wondering what's next … perhaps the Boogeyman in the bedroom closets?

Bravo: to the online forum for the Polytechnic campus called "Cheers & Jeers." We applaud ASU for giving students a public forum to air their grievances — one that's often quite entertaining. (Some sample Jeers include: garbage bins left on curbs too long, tampon dispensers being replaced with condom dispensers, knee-high weeds, soda machines lacking water, too much mud on the ground.) Hey, wait a second ... this "Cheers & Jeers" idea sounds an awful lot like a certain beloved State Press Friday opinions feature. Oh yes, thieves, our lawyers have been notified.
