The pencil skirt is synonymous with the sexy secretary, the sexy career woman and the sexy teacher. Basically, the skirt is downright sexy. ASU supply chain management alumna Erin Chow is a fan of the pencil skirt. Currently a business analyst with Mervyn's, Chow says she likes to spice up her work wardrobe. "The fun thing about pencil skirts is that they can change your whole look into sleek and chic from your everyday dress pants" Chow says. "If you're normally more conservative like Miranda or Charlotte from "Sex and the City," you'll feel like a sexy and feisty Samantha Jones when pairing a pencil skirt with the right heels," she adds. But, not everyone can pull a pencil skirt off correctly — it must be the right length and fit, and be worn with the right accessories. Here are a couple tips to avoid looking like a girl celebrating Halloween three months too late.

Tip #1: Make sure the skirt is the right length.

The skirt should hit mid-knee and not be any longer. If the pencil skirt is too long (below the knees), women run the risk of making themselves look shorter and stumpier than they actually are.

Tip #2: Make sure the skirt is the right fit.

It is supposed to be fitted, not overly tight and constricting. There is no reason to wear a skirt that is reminiscent of sausage casing. Pencil skirts tend to be high-waisted, but if that's uncomfortable, try a skirt that has a lower rise. Also, pair the skirt with a flowing blouse or simple button-up shirt to create a balanced and classy look. Always remember to tuck the top in — there is no reason to hide womanly hips.

Tip #3: Make sure you have the right accessories.

A wide belt over a pencil skirt is flattering, classic and cute. Jewelry should always be simple and classic. Over-the-top jewelry or too much of it can make a girl look like a "working girl," but not the executive type.

Tip #4: Always wear heels with the skirt.

Wear a high heel with the pencil skirt. Flats create a squat look. Heels automatically lengthen legs and makes anyone look leaner — which is necessary.

Tip #5: Own it.

The best accessory for the pencil skirt is confidence. Insecurity is a definite fashion no-no. Embrace your curves and the body you were blessed with and people will turn heads and take notice.
