IT’S WHAT A GRILLED CHEESE IS ALL ABOUT: Why not try a milkshake with your grilled cheese at In-N-Out?

The grilled-cheese sandwich is the American classic that keeps toddlers and college students from unbearable hunger.

It's no wonder April has been dubbed National Grilled Cheese Month.

In the United States., grilled-cheese sandwiches were introduced during the Roaring '20s as a simple open-faced sandwich with white bread and American cheese.

The second slice of bread was added in the 1960s, specific reasoning unknown, but perhaps as a way to make the sandwich more filling.

While you can easily make a grilled-cheese sandwich at home, there are a few restaurants in the Tempe area that can satisfy your cheesy tooth just as easily, and perhaps better — it's just a matter of knowing where to look.

In-N-Out Burger

$1.80
920 E Playa Del Norte Dr.
800-786-1000

Just ask for the grilled-cheese sandwich. It is served with the same fixings as a regular burger — special sauce and all.

Casey Moore's Oyster House and Seafood Restaurant

$5.50-$6
850 S. Ash Ave.
480-968-9935

Sub the tomato soup with a Bloody Mary and custom order your grilled-cheese to be made with white, wheat, rye or sourdough bread. Choose from cheddar, pepper-jack, provolone or mozzarella cheese to reinvent an old-time combo.

Mac's Broiler and Tap

$6.50
6430 S. McClintock Dr.
480-755-3050

This joint offers a variety of burgers but also a grilled-cheese sandwich if you feel so inclined. With tomatoes and chives, this sandwich combines cream cheese and provolone, Swiss, American and cheddar cheese on toasted sourdough bread.

Bison Witches

$4.75
21 E 6th St. # 146
480-894-9104

Likely overlooked in favor of other meatier sandwiches, the grilled-cheese sandwich at Bison Witches combines cheddar and your choice of bread (white, wheat, or dark rye).

Sonic

$1.72
1122 E. Broadway
480-902-1800

A cheap classic found on the kids' menu. Made with fluffy Texas toast and shrink-wrapped American cheese, this grilled-cheese sandwich will satisfy your craving without breaking the bank of even the poorest college student.

El Penasco Mexican Kitchen

$4.97
19 E. Broadway Rd.
480-736-1488

Even though it's not a classic grilled-cheese, you can still embrace your Southwestern roots and try a cheese quesadilla with salsa. Made with a fresh flour tortilla and cheddar cheese, this quesadilla will satisfy your cheese cravings.
